Why did I open Glitz?

My interests have always been related to design. I am by no means an artist, but I do enjoy dabbling in a variety of mediums. I have a degree in Environmental Design from the Faculty of Architecture, and it is there that I really came to appreciate beautiful things. Canadian talent can be in many mediums whether it is in the form of a teapot or a beautiful vase.

The Glitz store was built out of a desire to be something different. Tired of seeing the same trendy, mass produced work in every store and knowing what was available, I decided to open Glitz. Focusing entirely on Canadian artists, we hope to expose the wonderful talents this country has to offer, while at the same time, keeping the store fun and constantly changing.

The name…

I am amazed at the amount of comments, both good and bad that I have received regarding the store name. Let me tell you it wasn’t easy! After ruling out 400 possibilities “Glitz” is the name that remained. So please let me further explain, and possibly defend my reasons for naming it so.
I realize that the word Glitz is paired with words such as garish, gaudy, loud, tasteless… the list goes on and on, and I know that in no way does the word "Glitz" describe a gallery atmosphere, so why did I choose it?  Besides the fact that it is a short, cute and an easy to remember name, it also describes the pieces in the store. How else can you describe pieces so diverse and different that not only sparkle and shine, they, like a glitzy piece of jewellery, get noticed. In a world full of mass produced items all looking the same it is that something different that stands the test of time.
